9. Ridley Scott Conceived The Blade Runner Universe As Consistent With Alien
With a long-awaited (and, for some people, dreaded) sequel to Blade Runner in the pipeline, many fans have often wondered how the universe in which the film is set could be expanded upon - after all, Philip K. Dick was renowned for setting his books in a continuous universe in which certain themes and structures crossed over from one story to another. Way back during the production of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott had already envisioned plans of his own for the universe in which it was set and conceived it as being the one and the same universe as his previous movie Alien. In the commentary to the final cut edition, he imagines how characters from Alien might well have drank in a bar around the corner from Deckard's apartment when they were back on earth. More recently, an easter egg in Prometheus features the line on a monitor which reads "I had a friend who used to run blades", while Scott considered calling Weyland Industries Weyland-Tyrell instead. Whether or not merging the two would prove to be a successful marriage of ideas remains to be seen - if indeed it ever makes it into a future movie.
