For the last three years in a row, the two highest-grossing movies of the year have come from Disney. Not only that, but they also boast five of the ten biggest-earning titles in history. As for Avatar and Titanic, seemingly untouchable as the most lucrative films ever made, guess who just acquired the rights to both? That's right. From a purely financial standpoint, Disney already have Hollywood all sewn up.
World domination is the next logical step, really.
When the Fox deal finally goes through, Disney will control an estimated 40% of the global box office. That's a fair chunk of change when you consider that the industry generated a not-inconsiderable $40.6bn last year.
Then when you factor in that the company's mind-boggling portfolio includes Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, ABC, ESPN, Hulu and much more, you start to get the sense that their stranglehold on the entertainment industry is about to become tighter than ever.
