Mission Impossible 6: 10 Things It Must Address

4. Differentiate From That "Other" Spy Franchise

The intro and end credits of Rogue Nation were way too reminiscent of older Bond films. So, too, was Solomon Lane, who would have fit right in with the Bond universe. Lane is acceptable, because he was a solid villain, but with five films in the can, it's really time for this series to branch out and become something different.

To some extent, the series has done that, but it could absolutely focus on the team element more. One daring option would be to have Cruise/Hunt appear as a secondary character in the next film (only to have him return in a more prominent role in the next installment). That would address both the issue of Renner being wasted, and the M:I movies being compared to the Bond films.

Maybe this particular point seems a bit trite, and it may be that the heightened role of MI 6 in Rogue Nation plays a part, but really, it's time for Mission Impossible to branch out (if it doesn't outright decide to call it a day after part six, that is).
