Mission Impossible 6: 10 Things It Must Address
5. Utilize Alec Baldwin
You want someone to handle meetings and talk on the phone a lot? Well, now that he's overseeing the team, how about letting Alec Baldwin's Alan Hunley handle it, instead of bogging Jeremy Renner down with the job?
Baldwin/Hunley was one of the nice surprises about Rogue Nation: while you expected him to act the part of the pompous, power-hungry jerk, and he absolutely did, in the end, he was won over by the IMF team, if only because they proved to him what an asset they could be - and how that could further his quest for power.
So now that he's on board, utilize the solid actor that Baldwin is. There's two easy ways to go about this (and probably several more beyond those):
- delve into his past. Who is he, how did he wind up as a CIA bigshot? What's his back story? You could almost paint him as a kindred soul to the IMF who left the field too long ago, and got sucked into the political, behind the scenes games
or
- have him do what is most predictable, and betray the team
Predictable isn't always bad. Hunley is a character who just feels greasy, perhaps because Baldwin is so good at playing that sort of role. There's nothing wrong with taking advantage of that, however.
