10 Things That Deserve Great Movie Adaptations
3. Fallout
Film adaptations of video games are, traditionally, garbage. Super Mario Bros was a disaster, the Tomb Raider movies were entertaining but disappointing, and Assassin's Creed was described as "a joylessly overplotted slog." It's tempting to give up on the idea altogether, but there are so many games that would make great movies if they were only handled correctly. Chief among these is the Fallout series.
The setting of Fallout is so interesting that any adaptation would automatically be in an advantageous position. Whether the filmmakers choose to directly adapt one of the video games (my personal choice would be Fallout 3) or create an entirely new story set in the wastelands, the world would up the quality of the production from the get-go.
Post-apocalyptic films like The Road and The Book of Eli have presented great takes on a blighted America, and Fallout would go even further, with the mythology of the Vaults adding a whole new level of intrigue and horror.
The monsters of the wastes, like roving bands of super mutants and terrifying death claws, would make fine villains, but having a human antagonist would be much more interesting. Whether the movie explored the humanity of the ghouls, or followed a faction like the Brotherhood of Steel or the Enclave, the study of people in the post-war world would be fascinating.
Amazingly, there have been various plans for a Fallout film adaptation since 1998, with none coming to fruition. However, there are so many good ideas in the Fallout games that a film trilogy or series would be very easy to make, and make well.
