10 Things That Make No Sense About Star Wars Sequels

4. How Did Maz Get Anakin's Lightsaber?

While her backstory would be more fleshed out in supplementary material, Maz Kanata's introduction in The Force Awakens immediately gave audiences the impression of her age, wisdom, and experience. She was like Yoda but less disciplined and more savvy, but still the de-facto unknowable mentor figure archetype that the Star Wars franchise has always employed.

Her biggest moment of revelation came when she showed Rey that she possessed the lightsaber originally belonging to Anakin Skywalker. The blue blade had been taken by Obi-Wan Kenobi, given to Luke Skywalker, and was lost in his fight with Darth Vader in Cloud City, along with his hand. When questioned on how she acquired the legendary weapon, she dismisses it as a tale for another time.

But another time never came. Despite having further appearances in the franchise, Maz never even mentioned the lightsaber, let alone how she came across it. From how mysterious her past is, she could have fought to death for the weapon in a Tatooine prison tournament or could have found it as a janitor in the Cloud City ventilation system. Both could be equally as likely. It hasn't even been revealed in the companion comics and it makes no sense for the series to leave such a massive plot contrivance unexplained.
