10 Things We Need To See In HBO Harry Potter Series

4. Professor McGonagall's Life Outside Of Hogwarts

Professor Minerva McGonagall is easily one of the most popular supporting characters in the Harry Potter franchise, played definitively by Dame Maggie Smith in the films. While recasting any part from Harry Potter is going to be a challenge, there is simply so much of McGonagall's life that needs to be explored.

McGonagall's earlier story could quite easily be tied in with the first wizarding war, yet there is little to explain her life outside of Hogwarts. What brought her to teaching in the first place? Where does her strength and power come from? Why is transfiguration her area of expertise? Most importantly, has she always been such a dry, sarcastic lady?

The Harry Potter franchise has predominantly dealt with the younger generation, with the adult characters taking supporting roles. McGonagall seems to be a character who has been through one hell of a life, coming out the other side as a fiercely passionate educator and believer in inclusion. It suggests that she has fought her way through extreme adversity to get to where she has been, rising to Headmistress of Hogwarts, even with one of the bumpiest career paths a teacher could hope for.

She is not simply a bastion of strength in the school but a key to understanding the struggles that witches face in Britain throughout the 20th century.
