10 Things We'd Love To See In Star Trek Into Darkness Sequels

8. The Romulan Empire

Thus far in Abram€™s universe we have met the Romulans only through Nero€™s mining crew. This tattooed enemy was crucial to establishing the independent universe, but we are yet to meet one of Starfleet's greatest foes on the show - the Romulans. With cloaking devices and Warbirds this race was a common enemy in The Original Series, and a recurring source of tension in The Next Generation. Including the true Romulan military would enable the franchise to update the Warbirds and the uniform of the Romulans; so far they have consistently had padded shoulders which gave the enemy an aged appearance. By altering the Romulans in the same way to the Klingons, the updated foe would be made menacing again. They could threaten The Enterprise and give us some sensational scenes. The militarism of the Romulan race would give the characters a chance to show their ability to defend themselves (given that in Into Darkness The Enterprise was nearly destroyed without much of a fight). Furthermore, a Romulan threat would enable a battle scene to be ended through diplomacy, rather than the malicious destruction of a ship - everyone on board Admiral Marcus€™ ship is presumed to have perished, and in Star Trek Captain Kirk and Spock allowed Nero€™s ship to be ripped apart without remorse. The Romulan precedent in The Original Series would enable the franchise to keep in line with the original franchise rather than stealing The Next Generation€™s enemy in The Borg. Certainly this would give fans of The Original Series greater satisfaction, and given the respect shown to the original franchise so far this looks more likely than The Borg.
