10 Things You Didn’t Know About Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade
2. Flying Fedoras
Harrison Ford was doubled by Vic Armstrong for all three films of the original trilogy, largely because Vic looked scarily like Ford at the time. In the Temple of Doom, Vic was brought in for a lot of extra work after the star herniated his back. So for Last Crusade, Ford decided to make up for lost time.
During the course of filming, Harrison decided to do the majority of his own stunts, from the high speed boat chase in Venice to the tank battle in the desert. It got to a point where Vic had to ask him if he could do some work for the film. One downside of this though that apparently didn't happen in previous instalments was that the famous fedora (given to Indy by a man named Fedora) would not stay on Ford's head.
Most of the time it flew off during Indy's scenes on horseback, and Ford tried glue, tape, stuffing the edges with newspaper and even resorted to stapling it onto his head (although that was revealed the be a joke for the "Making Of" documentary).
