6. The Film Was The Feature Film Debut Of Frances McDormand
Frances McDormand may be an iconic actress now - known for her Oscar-winning roles in Fargo and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - but before Blood Simple, she was practically unknown.
She had appeared in some theatre and television, but when the Coens cast her in Blood Simple, this was her first feature film.
McDormand was so new to cinema that she didn’t even know how to act in front of the camera. She said she just followed the Coens' instructions, which actually fitted with the character’s naivety and innocence. McDormand has established that this was not an artistic choice, however - she just didn't know what to do.
