The dialogue of The Big Lebowski is one of the films great strengths. This being a Coen bros picture, you might've assumed that this was all down to a tight script, despite the fact that the rapport between the core cast is so colloquial and genuine-seeming that it often seems like it must be improvised. There is, in fact, just one solitary improvisation in the film. According to John Goodman, the only made-up-on-the-spot line kept in the finished movie is when The Dude refers to the other Lebowski as a human paraquat in a particularly animated moment. You can almost see Bridges beginning to laugh as the nonsensical words tumble from his mouth. Almost everything else in the film is said to have been scripted. If you were wondering, this includes 147 uses of the word man, 292 F-bombs, 17 references to the rug and 5 remembrances of how it really tied the room together.
