10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Hellraiser
2. The Producers Didn't Like How Pinhead Was Portrayed
Because of his striking look and visceral methods of slaying his victims, Pinhead always had a distinctive presence in the slasher genre. But the character also stands out due to his unmistakable intelligence and articulate way of speaking. Despite his monstrous appearance, every utterance he makes is with eloquence and poise.
Unfortunately, the producers were worried that portraying Pinhead this way would make him come across as boring. Instead, they wanted to see him quipping one-liners and making jokes, much like Freddy Kruger. It was also suggested that Pinhead shouldn't speak at all, much like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. Because Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street were the biggest slasher franchises at the time, you can understand why the producers wanted to have Pinhead depicted this way.
Unsurprisingly, Clive Barker hated this idea, affirming the character would come across as more intimidating if he had "penetrating intelligence" and a commanding presence like Dracula. The producers may have changed several aspects of production but thankfully left the character of Pinhead untouched, allowing Barker to portray him the way he intended.
