10 Times Horror Movie Directors Gave INSANE Performances As Actors

Some horror directors have as much talent in front of the camera as behind it.

Alfred Hitchcock made a name for himself not just as a prominent director but as the king of movie cameos. In nearly every one of his films, Hitchcock made a blink-and-you-will-miss-it appearance, eventually endearing himself to the moviegoing public so much that he was able to feature in trailers to get them to attend his pictures.

While it is true that cameos such as these can be distracting, especially while watching a scary movie, more often than not, these directors have the kind of personality that makes it impossible not to grin when they show up on camera. And if they only pop up for a couple of seconds, what's the harm?

But rather than settling for an easy-to-miss walk-on, some horror movie directors sometimes decide to play a prominent role in the story.

Now, it should maybe go without saying that a lot of these horror director acting performances usually aren't Oscar-worthy. With that said, some horror icons gave 110% in their role, to the point where it becomes the most defining part of the whole film.

Whether they inserted themselves into their own project or starred in another movie as a favour to a friend, these 10 horror visionaries went all out with their performances.

10. Osgood Perkins - The Monkey

After the deeply disturbing Longlegs, Osgood Perkins went into the opposite direction for his next project, putting together a tongue-in-cheek horror called The Monkey. In this Stephen King adaptation, twin brothers find their lives changed forever after discovering a toy monkey that triggers horrific deaths each time it plays a drum solo.

Throughout the film, the titular villain uses its demonic power to slaughter its victims with bees, harpoon guns, and bowling balls.

With that in mind, it isn't much of a surprise to learn that Perkins' own character meets their maker in the most absurd way.

Perkins cast himself as the twins' uncle, Chip. Despite his brief appearance, he makes an impression since it's blatantly obvious he has no idea how to deal with children, even after he's tasked with looking after the boys.

However, we never get to see how Chip would've fared as the children's carer since he's trampled by 67 horses moments after being introduced, leaving his bloody remains looking like "somebody drop-kicked a cherry pie".
