10 Times The MCU Betrayed Your Trust

4. The Taskmaster Reveal (Black Widow)

In the build up to the release of Black Widow, the first MCU movie for almost two years, the marketing very specifically kept the identity of Taskmaster hidden. The mask stayed on in every bit of promotional material, which led to theories around who it could be.

Some thought it could be Clint, some thought O T Fagbenle’s Rick Mason, and some even went so far as thinking it could be a clone of Natasha herself. Either way, fans were excited to see who was behind the mask so much so that it became one of the most anticipated moments of the entire movie.

The reveal itself was criminally underwhelming. Natasha’s relationship with Dreykov’s daughter had been touched on very slightly in The Avengers in 2012, and while it was good that her own movie brought us back to it, it certainly wasn’t deserving of such a big moment.

Realistically, no one was particularly invested in the fate of Dreykov’s daughter, so why would Marvel tease the reveal surely knowing that it would be wildly uninspiring? Maybe this was a product of fans having too much time to think about the movie with all of the reshuffling, but Marvel certainly didn’t help themselves.
