A franchise once so full of inspiration and genuine fun has been so diminished that its difficult to remember that the world was once collectively chomping-at-the-bit for more from these characters.
Note, Johnny Depp was nominated for an Oscar for his initial role as Captain Jack Sparrow. An Oscar. Now, Depp's Sparrow is nothing more than a cheap imitation of what has come before.
This past year's fifth installment was a step up from the franchise-low of 2011's On Stranger Tides, but a small step at best.
The film was tired, Depp was the worst he's ever been in the role, and the story took some exceedingly questionable and convoluted turns. Not to mention that it ended with a tease that Davy Jones would return as the villain in the next film. But if the best idea you have for your franchise is to literally rehash stories you've already told, then what's the point?
