Jack the Ripper's reign of terror has been the subject of stories since his first slash of a throat in 1888, and From Hell takes direct inspiration from the man's tale to create a sinister web of conspiracies Inspector Abberline soon finds himself lost in. Where the real stories never see Jack named and shamed as a tangible person, From Hell suggests that the Ripper's identity was out there to be found - just protected by the Freemasons to avoid a royal scandal.

Of course, the Freemasons themselves are brotherhoods of religious men that form individual organisations for their own gain, and are secretly embroiled in events much larger than themselves, if conspiracy theories are taken into account. At the time of Jack the Ripper's activity, the Freemasons would have been an even more covert and impenetrable group than today - but their involvement has never been proven in an official capacity.

Truly, Jack the Ripper is such a mystery that it's no wonder so many fictitious accounts have been inspired by his media attention in the 1800s. Freemasons might just be the answer.
