10 Underrated Rom-Coms You Have To See

5. Man Up

Celeste And Jesse Forever
StudioCanal

Released in 2015, Man Up follows Nancy (Lake Bell), a single woman who Jack (Simon Pegg) mistakes for his blind date. Going along with the mistake, charmed by Jack's initial introduction, Nancy claims to be his blind date and the two spend the night drinking, bowling and connecting to one another.

Despite a poor box office performance (making just $3 million worldwide), Man Up is a rom-com which manages to perfectly balance its themes of love and comedy. It's awkward, but sports enough charm thanks to the typically confident performances and chemistry of Bell and Pegg, and although the plot is mostly a predictable affair, it doesn't take effect away from the film's funniest and more touching moments.

Outside of its cliches and over-done story points, Man Up is clever enough to know it's a rom-com and never falls into the genre's typical feel of formulaic characters and plot progression - it is instead fun, engaging, and refreshing, with an ending that is both sweet and affecting and well worth the wait.
