10 Unintentionally Funny Moments In Star Wars
4. That Kiss
Look, Lucas, we get it—planning out an entire WhatCulture
article is hard too, and they are inevitably times when we realise we’re short
one entry or we’ve mixed up two Friday the 13th instalments (yes it
should have said Part 9, not 5, we’re aware, but come on the death threats have
got to stop). But planning a trilogy ahead of time, particularly a big budget blockbuster
franchise, is pretty high stakes stuff, and there are some sizeable risks
involved in making it up as you go along.
This doesn’t mean we need to hear about the history of midichlorians to understand the Force—some bits of mythology can (and maybe even should) just remain in the realms of unexplained coolness. But the kiss shared between Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker—you know, before we discover the pair are siblings?
Yeah that probably needs more explaining than, say, the Galactic Senate’s stance on tariff reforms. The Empire Strikes Back producer Gary Kurtz would go on to explain that Luke’s sister was intended to be introduced later from “way over the other side of the galaxy”, but the subplot was dropped to “wrap up everything neatly.”
You know, everything except the unintentional hilarity of the pair’s abandoned attempts at romantic chemistry, that is.
