7. Speed - Bob The Bus Driver
Thankfully nearly everyone on the main bus got to survive the day’s tumultuous events. The same however can’t be said for one particular person who at the beginning of SPEED was just minding his own business and getting his breakfast before setting off to drive a bus around the Los Angeles highways.
The first bus driver Bob is friendly to Keanu Reeves and the coffee shop owner, and as he drives away he is blown to smithereens as a message to Keanu that his bad day has only just begun.
What really sucks about this characters death is that it’s completely ancillary and chaotic. Much like the security guard who appears after the films opening credits, or the train driver at the end, these were just people doing their jobs who just so happened to cross paths with Dennis Hopper’s character.
But Bob’s bus was targeted to get to Keanu. Bob was a civilian who just so happened to be driving the wrong bus that day. Had he called in sick, been given a different route or hell- just not stopped to get a coffee before setting off, his day would have ended a lot different.
