8. How Did Lex Luthor Escape From Arkham Asylum?

In Justice League's post-credits scene, we learn that an imposter has taken Lex Luthor's place in Arkham Asylum, and he's now a free man chilling out on a yacht at sea. It might have made for a cool stinger, but how did Lex escape and what, if anything, did it have to do with Steppenwolf?

In a deleted scene released online by Warner Bros. shortly after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrived in cinemas, Lex Luthor was shown communicating with Steppenwolf and seemingly bringing him to Earth. Later placed in Arkham by Batman, Lex strongly hinted that he had aligned himself with the cosmic baddie, but he was nowhere to be seen for a good 99% of Joss Whedon's Justice League.

Eisenberg has denied shooting many scenes for the superhero ensemble, but it's hard to believe Snyder didn't have bigger plans for the character. His escape was addressed in the vaguest way possible, and there surely should have been more to it than that. Otherwise, what was the point of Batman putting him there in the first place? Of course, that's not the only question this leaves...
