10 Upcoming Blockbusters That Could Massively Disappoint
4. Star Wars Episode VII (December 18, 2015)
Disney's $4bn acquisition of Lucasfilm was quickly followed by the announcement that audiences will get a new Star Wars movie every year, with Episodes VII, VIII and IX alternating with standalone spin-offs. Although that presents a real danger of running the franchise into the ground, a solid roster of talent has been assembled so far with the likes of Gareth Edwards, Rian Johnson and Josh Trank signed up to direct the movies. However, first out of the gate is JJ Abrams' currently-shooting Episode VII, which is already shaping up to be one of the most highly-anticipated blockbusters in history. But then again, so was The Phantom Menace... Ever since Episode VII was officially announced, the rumor mill has gone into overdrive with every quote and set photo being analyzed and dissected in the hope of discovering some concrete information about the movie. Of course, with this being a JJ Abrams project everything has been shrouded in mystery. What we do know is that returning stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have been joined by a host of talented co-stars including John Boyega, Domhall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac and Andy Serkis. Another encouraging aspect is that the production is utilizing practical effects and location shoots, as the prequel trilogy greatly suffered from George Lucas' over-reliance on CGI and greenscreen. While Episode VII will almost certainly become one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, the quality of Disney's big-budget blockbusters has been decidedly hit-or-miss over the last few years, although it remains to be seen how much influence the Mouse House holds over the production. Given that Star Wars has remained part of the cultural zeitgeist for almost 40 years and is possibly the most popular movie franchise in history, Episode VII has insanely high expectations to live up to. While the talent both in front and behind of the camera is brimming with quality, audiences have been burned before by the big-screen resurrection of the Star Wars saga.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
