10 Upcoming Horrors We Can't Believe Are Happening

9. Orphans

Jaume Collet-Serra's psychological thriller Orphan opens with a struggling couple adopting a disturbed nine-year-old called Esther (played masterfully by Isabelle Fuhrman). In the end, "Esther" is exposed as a murderous adult called Leena who suffers from hypopituitarism, making her look deceptively young.

Orphan was well-received and fared well at the box office, so greenlighting a follow-up was the next logical step. However, Leena died during the climax, meaning the only way the potential franchise could move forward was with a prequel.

That prequel, Orphan: First Kill, was a mixed bag, but it fleshed out the diminutive villainess and showed a more vulnerable side to her. The story also concludes shortly before Orphan canonically, leaving the IP with little else to explore.

And yet, another instalment is in the works. Orphans started as an inbetweenquel, taking place between First Kill and Orphan, though it was later clarified that Orphans is set before First Kill, making it a prequel to a prequel.

Although Isabelle Fuhrman is passionate about Leena, the idea of this actress (who's nearly 30) continuing to portray a childlike character is problematic. Be that as it may, Orphans is coming whether we like it or not.
