10 Upcoming Movie Adaptations Of Japanese Anime (And If They Will Work)

4. Robotech

The Anime:

Like Voltron, Robotech is an anime that was stitched together using three disparate 80s shows - Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada. In the combined/edited story, Robotech refers to the alien technology discovered in a UFO crash site in the South Pacific. The people of Earth use the new tech to develop robotic machines (known as Mecca) to defend the planet against three successive extraterrestrial invasions.

What We Know:

Currently one of the hottest properties in Hollywood due to the massive success of Furious 7, director James Wan has been signed by Sony to direct the new live-action version of Robotech. Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton, best known for the CG/live action 300 franchise, will be producing the film with G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra writer Michael Gordon tasked with adapting a screenplay from Robotech's 85 episode run.

Will It Work?

Much like Voltron, Robotech runs the risk of becoming another big budget Transformers copy if it decides to follow the same model, though the saving grace for fans of the anime series is that Wan seems pretty well informed. The most popular, and subsequently most iconic season of the show was the first one, which was based on Macross. Wan cited Macross as one of the reasons he became interested in the Robotech remake, which bodes well for die-hards and new-comers alike.
