10 Upcoming Movie Remakes You Should Be More Annoyed About Than Ghostbusters
6. The Mummy
There's nothing intrinsically wrong with remaking The Mummy. As a horror icon it's ripe for re-exploration, and the 1999 version isn't anywhere near as special as it felt at the time, so there's no real offence to be had.
However, Tom Cruise taking on the bandaged beast isn't just a remake, it's laying the groundwork for a f*ck-tonne of them. You see, The Mummy's part of a Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe that also includes Johnny Depp's Invisible Man, Russell Crowe's Jekyll And Hyde, Scarlett Johansson's Creature From The Black Lagoon, as well as proposed outings for Wolf Man, Van Helsing and Frankenstein. That's a bold proposition, one that's clearly an attempt by a studio to do a Marvel despite not owning any superhero rights.
Now this is Universal, who have shown recently a great understanding of how to make blockbuster hits from unexpected sources, but this doesn't seem like a winner. The first film in the franchise has already been and gone with barley any hype: Dracula Untold, a dreary revisionist fantasy that couldn't hold together and was hurt most by forced attempts to set up a bigger world. Who wants more?
