2. Aladdin
Aladdin faces a lot of the same problems that The Lion King faces, plus some other ones to boot.
No, they won’t have to worry too much about anthropomorphising the animals: Abu was a minor character and Iago’s characterisation all came from his voice. Although unfortunately Gilbert Gottfried is not reprising his role, there’s little reason to doubt that seasoned voice actor Alan Tudyk can step up to the plate.
Around Will Smith though, there’s a lot more doubt. He’s been a leading man for close to three decades in some huge flicks, but Genie defined Robin Williams’ career. He’s got huge shoes to fill, and the marketing got him off to a rocky start.
Considering no one really wants this remade, it seems an unnecessary risk to go against the legacy of arguably the greatest Disney performance ever.
As well as this, there’s been some controversy over the alleged ‘brownwashing’ of white extras to fit the Arabian setting, and complaints that the ruggedly handsome Marwan Kenzari is woefully miscast as Jafar.
While fans might be disappointed by The Lion King, they’ll definitely be pissed off if Aladdin doesn’t live up to Robin Williams’ standards. Which, let’s be honest, it probably won’t.
