10 Upcoming Movies That Could Massively Overperform At The Box Office
7. Detective Pikachu
Like many of the films on this list, Detective Pikachu is expected to do quite well for itself, with BoxOfficePro predicting that it will make around $75 million domestically in its opening weekend. A large sum, no doubt, but when you look at all that it has going for it, you'll see why it could potentially exceed that.
The film's biggest selling point is the fact that it's the first ever live-action Pokémon film, meaning that fans of this 20-year old phenomenon will finally get the chance to see their favourite Pokémon in live-action. Now, it doesn't take a Pokédex to figure out that these fans, young and old, will fork out money to see something they've waited decades for.
Moreover, Warner Bros. has done a great job with the promotion, producing numerous well-received and, quite frankly, hilarious trailers, and the casting of Ryan Reynolds in the titular role will undoubtedly give the film an added boost.
Finally, it arrives during Avengers: Endgame's third week, which is late enough in the game to avoid suffering any significant damage and, it may even benefit from being an alternative to any family suffering from 'superhero fatigue'. While it may not topple the almighty heroes, it also won't have any other significant competition for at least two weeks when Aladdin arrives (which may end up underperforming).
Taking all that into account, Detective Pikachu could very well end up grossing significantly higher than its initial projections.
