10 Upcoming Movies That Have Made Terrible Mistakes Already
2. More Style Over Substance? - Gemini Man
What is Ang Lee playing at? He’s always had an eccentric career, but he seems like he wants to take it to new extremes.
After the gorgeous, Academy Award winning Life Of Pi, Lee followed with Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk. Lee ensured it was the first film to be shot with a 120 frame rate, so while that too looked good, it didn’t translate to any critical or commercial success.
It wasn’t the kind of film to benefit from such a technological ‘advancement’, though. There’s even been some suggestion that Lee was too bogged down in that side of things to give the film itself the proper attention.
Of course, great directors sometimes make bad films, even when it seems like they’re building momentum. However, with Gemini Man, Ang Lee seems poised to repeat the trick once more.
Gemini Man stars Will Smith as an assassin who has been cloned, and must survive as a younger version of himself hunts him down. It feels like quite a dated concept, beneath the sort of intelligent subtexts sci fi movies are expected to have today.
Lee has insisted Smith has turned in a career best performance, but so far it seems very style over substance.
