5. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay
The final part of The Hunger Games book trilogy becomes the final two parts of The Hunger Games film quartet (or quadrilogy if you let releases of Alien DVDs define your vocabulary). This is the big one. We've had the introduction to Panam. We've had the one where things get real (due out later this year). Now the big revolution begins. And if thats a spoiler, what did you think the sequels would do?
Why it could be rubbish: Theres going to be an issue with any franchise coming from teen fiction in the next five years or so of trying too hard to become the new Twilight. When I saw The Hunger Games I took from it the world and the varied characters, but others chose to focus on the three way relationship. The dilemma Katniss finds herself in, publicly with Peeta but emotionally with Gale, is an interesting draw, but to put too much of a focus on it can be dangerous. And it looks like this is going to be an concern. In keeping with the rule for the final part of any major book adaptation (because only the ending is important), Mockingjay is being released as two movies. Why directors keep letting this happen I dont know. It neutered what should have been the best Harry Potter and kept Twilight raking in money longer than it should, not to mention a certain hairy footed prequel. The attempt is clearly to create an epic scale/make more money. The concern is that while that may be achieved, too much time will be spent on the relationship than even Stephanie Meyers books did.
