6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
The Amazing Spider-Man desperately needed a follow up. Not because that film was good and left us wanting more, but because there were major plot threads we all wanted to see resumed. Will Peter catch Uncle Bens killer? What was the deal with his parents? What happened to that lizard rat? Fear not, a sequel is here to take responsibility for the originals abuse of power.
Why it could be rubbish: Even the cast and crew of The Amazing Spider-Man admitted it was let down. Dont worry though; theyve learnt from their mistakes and this one will be much better. Theres no origin story to deal with this time, just fun Spidey goodness. The thing is, these are the same people who originally said the first one was going to be spectacular, so forgive me if I find it hard to trust them again. Theres been nothing really said about Uncle Ben or the parent mystery (and I think Im the only one who cared about the rat), meaning theyre likely cut again (along with Mary Jane) now there are two more sequels to come, but theres bigger problems here. The main issue with Spider-Man 3 (well, one of them) was the too many villains syndrome. Amazing cut that down, but the sequel is back on it. Weve got Jamie Foxx as Electro (a well meaning scientist turned into a crazed madman, how original), Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborne and Dane DeHaan as his son, Harry. The first was at its best when there was no villain, so please dont throw in countless numbers of them. Considering theyll all come with their own drawn out origin story, it doesnt seem like any lessons have been learnt. Also, the fact this film isnt called The Spectacular Spider-Man is a down right travesty.
