10 Upcoming Movies That Will Change Your Mind About Actors You Hate
8. LAbyrinth - Johnny Depp
Even without the allegations about his private life that have caused Johnny Depp a publicity nightmare in the past couple of years, he was already struggling against a tide of ill-will thanks to some wayward career choices. Recently, it seems like he's gone from being a discerning character actor to a guy who makes provocatively bad or mind-numbingly mediocre films, and by his own early standards, it really hasn't been a good time.
If you're looking for further indication of his public profile at the minute, go back and witness the reaction to his minutes-long cameo as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts. He's great, slimy and terrifying, but the reaction suggests something entirely different, because commenters struggled to separate character from actor.
Depp has a couple of possible olive branches coming up - first with his villainous turn in Murder On The Orient Express (there's no way Kenneth Branagh would stand for any over-acting there), and then with Brad Furman's Tupac/Notorious B.I.G. murder story LAbyrinth.
He plays Russell Poole, the disgraced LAPD detective who tried to solve the case and accused Suge Knight of orchestrating the murders. It has the potential to be his Zodiac, and if it captures even a little of that film's success, we're all in for a treat.
