10 Upcoming Movies That Will (Probably) Tease Cinematic Universes
3. Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat has long stood as one of the most popular and controversial video game franchises of all time, being blasted from multiple fronts for its profane use of gratuitous violence in the series' "fatalities." Fortunately for NetherRealm Studios, a lot of people really, really love it. What fans also love are the 90s films based on the franchise. These films are pretty much the worst of the worst when it comes to filmmaking, but their so-bad-its-good quality has garnered them a firm cult-following.
If the latter's popularity is anything to go on, then 2021's reboot could be a sure thing as far as financial success is concerned. The reboot, directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by film veteran James Wan, has already cast fan-favourite characters like Sub-Zero, Raiden, and Sonya Blade, as well as confirmed that fatalities will be present.
These aforementioned characters have enough recognition in popular culture to head their own film series, with the multi-ethnic and gender diverse roster providing a shared universe with enough widespread appeal among varied audiences. This also wouldn't be the first time that James Wan spear-headed a shared universe, with his already successful Conjuring franchise dominating the horror genre.
