10 Upcoming Movies With INSANE Budgets

These movie budgets are absolutely SHOCKING.

The business of making movies doesn't come cheap, and while even apparently "modest" genre films can easily end up costing north of $50 million these days, at the very end of the scale the number just keeps ballooning year over year.

The most ambitious, star-studded, and effects-filled films being produced by Hollywood cost more than a pretty penny, and in recent years the average cost of a tentpole packed with A-listers has regularly crept over the $200 million mark.

Sometimes you might be able to see where most of the money is going, but in many instances the spend seems so absolutely outrageous considering what audiences are going to get out of it.

And that's absolutely true of these 10 upcoming movies, which regardless of how good they do (or don't) look, are rocking obscene budgets relative to their potential returns and the industry as a whole.

It goes without saying that only a few films on this list stand much chance of actually turning a profit theatrically, given that the upfront cost of doing business is so maddeningly huge.

In other instances, though, streaming services are stepping in to foot the bill, given the totally different value proposition that a made-for-streaming film presents...

10. Wake Up Dead Man ($210 Million)

Though the first two Knives Out movies are undeniably brilliantly made, star-studded affairs, they're also modest-ish productions by Hollywood standards, given that they're set in a limited number of locations and don't require oodles of CGI.

As such, Knives Out cost a mere $40 million, and while the price tag for the Netflix-backed sequel Glass Onion has never been officially released, it's likely in a similar ballpark.

But for the third entry into the franchise, Wake Up Dead Man, director Rian Johnson will be working with a $210 million budget according to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider.

To be clear, that's more than five-times what the original cost, and while it stands to reason that Johnson, Daniel Craig, and the rest of the cast will be commanding hefty upfront paydays to offset the lack of theatrical residuals, that's still an outrageous amount to spend on a murder mystery movie.

Now of course, everyone and their mother will be watching Wake Up Dead Man when it releases on streaming on December 12, but given the stonkingly huge budget, it feels like they're leaving money on the table by not giving it a proper theatrical rollout first.
