10 Utterly Devastating Horror Movie Endings You Didn't See Coming
5. Sinners
Sinners really is the poster-child for just how good 2025 was to horror fans, and while there was a lot of buzz surrounding Ryan Coogler's vampiric story before release, no one could have been expecting it to break the all-time record for Oscar nominations (16).
It was more than just a vampire flick, and while it was spurred forward by every single cast member - from Miles Caton's debut to Michael B. Jordan's career-best effort - knocking it out of the park, there were more poignant and deeply emotional themes at play.
To this point, while Remmick's (Jack O'Connell) brood sank their teeth into the bulk of the core group of characters, one of the last remaining protagonists, Smoke, the elder of Jordan's twins, was killed by an unnamed and largely unseen member of the KKK.
With the bulk of the story surrounding vampires, and Smoke having to first see his brother taken, and then having to fight him off, to have the character killed off in this way was completely unexpected and heartbreaking. At least he got to be with Annie (Wunmi Mosaku), but honestly, this only stood to make the ending even more devastating.
