10 Video Game Movies That Were Truly Terrible

2. Super Mario Bros. (1993)

Mortal Kombat Annihilation
Buena Vista Pictures

The world's most loveable plumber, and his brother in a zany adventure, sounds like a hit but Mario and Luigi were destined for disaster. Super Mario Bros. prioritised visual effects over an appealing plot with disastrous results. It seems that this was a case of an idea that was a better poster than a film.

While this might not be a deal-breaker for some, the fact that Yoshi had one of the most compelling character journeys illustrates how far this film missed the mark.

Despite a huge budget, dinosaurs and a solid cast this film could not get its plot of the ground. In fact, not even Dennis Hopper playing Bowser was enough to get critics and fans on board with the crazy plot. While many seem to have been excited at seeing Mario in cinemas, this film seems to have left lasting damage on the franchise as a live-action Mario film has not been attempted since.

This film may be worth a watch if you enjoy terrible films and cult viewing. Otherwise, it seems that the cinematic adventures of Mario and Luigi are best forgotten, especially when the games are so good.
