Because every great story needs a great bad guy.

Comic book movies are hot property in Hollywood, with almost any superhero franchise of worth being considered for a big screen adaptation. With the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. have recently announced their plans for the DC Extended Universe, which will see a number of joint-continuity films being produced and released until, at least, 2020.

With popular DC heroes such as Batman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern all getting a big-screen revamp, this will be the first time that all of these iconic characters have existed within the same live-action, cinematic universe, and will inevitably lead to a Justice League movie, scheduled to be released in two parts during 2017, and 2019 respectively.

As popular as these heroes are however, they are nothing without their villains. The characters who make the lives of everyone in the DC Universe a living hell. Whether they are trying to rule the galaxy, blow up a city, or simply ruin the lives of their arch-nemesis, the villains of the DC Universe are an eclectic bunch of characters, who all bring a unique dynamic to the stories they are involved in.

This list looks at the DC villains who could make a huge difference to the success of the DC Extended Universe, be it in standalone movies, or as part of an ensemble Justice League movie, and help to create the live-action universe that DC fans have wanted to see for so long.

10. Sinestro

The Green Lantern mythology is as expansive as any in the DC Universe, and one villain is, more often than not, at the centre of any major events in the world of the Lanterns. Sinestro.

Once viewed as the greatest Green Lantern of them all, Thaal Sinestro was Hal Jordan's partner in the Green Lantern Corp in his early days, before turning his back on the intergalactic peace-keepers, and embracing the yellow light of fear, and establishing the Sinestro Corps to take down the Green Lanterns. This led to the huge event known as 'The Sinestro Corps War', in which the Green and Yellow Lanterns battled all over the galaxy in a violent war that saw many Lanterns killed in combat.

Having been portrayed already on-screen by Mark Strong in 2011's cinematic flop 'Green Lantern', a new depiction of Sinestro would give casual fans a better look at what Hal Jordan's greatest villain is all about, and could allow for an eventual on-screen telling of the Sinestro Corps War. With 'Green Lantern Corps' scheduled to be released in cinemas in 2020, and Green Lantern heavily rumoured to appear in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, could we see an all-new Sinestro on the big screen sooner rather than later?
