6. Henry Tries to Help the Baby Eraserhead (1977)
The second sequence from Lynch's unforgettable debut to appear on this list, this one comes towards the end of the film when the mutant-esque baby Jack Nance's bewildered Henry Spencer has been left with suddenly begins to die after he cuts open its bandages. The prop used to create the baby itself apparently remains a secret, with Lynch refusing to reveal its true nature in the subsequent years since, but the practical effect of it (the material bubbling up, the way the neck moves etc) all add to its creepiness. It's one of those scenes that's horrible and grotesque and yet you can't look away - Lynch had a real knack for that sort of thing - and just one of the many examples of what makes Eraserhead one of the director's most distinctive and memorable films. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV2xAAJOmVo
