10 Weird & Obscure Facts About Quentin Tarantino

2. Calvin Candie Is The First Character He's Ever Hated

Django-Unchained-Photo-2-26-4 Calvin Candie, the "boy emperor" and central villain in Django Unchained, is the first villain that Tarantino has ever actively despised. "I hated Candie, and I normally like my villains no matter how bad they are," he revealed to journalist Michael Fleming. "I see their point of view. I could see his point of view, but I hated it so much. For the first time as a writer, I just f_cking hated this guy." That's a pretty big statement, considering that the pen of Tarantino has brought to life such fiends as the ear-slicing Mr Blonde, sword-wielding Elle Driver, and 'The Jew Hunter', Hans Landa. However, Tarantino's revulsion towards slavery and the racist anti-black sentiment of the southern United States could be a distinct factor in his dislike. Speaking with journalist and scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr., Tarantino discusses his morbid fascination with anti-black, pro-Klan texts The Birth of a Nation and The Clansman. Describing such texts as "evil", (a term he specifies he doesn't use lightly), in his opinion only Mein Kampf comes close to its level of "ugly imagery". For Tarantino, Django Unchained reverses the "hogwash" of the 1940s and 1950s Westerns that championed Anglo-American superiority.
