10 Weirdest Dracula Adaptations
2. Jonathan
This one is a great concept that unfortunately gets lost somewhere along the way. The movie just can’t decide what it is. We're introduce to a race of vampires who retain all their powers in daylight. As such, the human race is in danger of becoming livestock, and if the vampires are silly, which they are, extinct.
It’s dreamy, it’s spaced out, it’s totally disjointed. The movie reframes Jonathan as the real hero of the story on a real hero’s journey, but there’s so much narrative drift that this idea becomes lost in a sea of beautifully photographed confusion.
Like the next movie on this list, there are obvious political undertones here. Like that movie, Dracs and his lackies represent the Nazis. Unlike that movie, they are the baddies, not the goodies (thank god).
It’s a confusing film. As a viewer you’re not sure if it’s a straight-up horror movie or a fable on fascism. It looks like a dream and ultimately, it’s as disjointed and confusing as one.
