10 Weirdest Moments In The Early Days Of DC Movies
8. Those Two Swamp Thing Films
Wes Craven is either the best horror director of his generation or somebody with a very shoddy filmography, depending how closely you peruse his CV. Yes, this is the man who kicked off the Nightmare On Elm Street series, who lampooned his own genre of choice in Scream; he's also the man who brought you this death scene, from 1986's Deadly Friend. One of the strangest forgotten Craven films, though, is his adaptation of DC's Swamp Thing. The character, whose book served as a proving ground for Alan Moore, ended up becoming a cult figure in the eighties thanks to the shamanic, bearded writer's run. Which is why they decided to cash in with a film. A terrible, horrible film starring Adrienne Barbeau and some of the worst creature make-up ever. Nobody liked it. And yet it inspired a sequel, Return Of The Swamp Thing. Which was a comedy. At least the first one made an attempt to translate Moore's grand, environmental tragedy, even if it was ham-fisted. It didn't turn it into a slapstick mess.
