10 Worst Big Money Trilogies Of All Time

7. The Mummy

Total Box Office: $1.415 billion Nobody expected sheer cinematic brilliance from an action-comedy starring Brendan Fraser battling a vengeful Egyptian spirit, but when The Mummy came out in 1999 the general consensus was that though the Stephen Sommers directed caper was nothing truly special or unique, it was still a lot of fun. Cue the not so imaginatively titled sequel The Mummy Returns in 2001 and its particularly embarrassing CGI rendering of Dwayne €˜The Rock€™ Johnson as the Scorpion King. It still made money though, even if the series was already starting to fall flat, and then the release of the third film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, seven years later (though why they bothered after all that time is anyone€™s guess) sealed the trilogy€™s fate. Proving that Hollywood just doesn€™t know when to quit, a Mummy reboot is currently in the works under the direction of Alex Kurtzman with rumours abounding that Tom Cruise will be joining the franchise. Oh goody.
