7. It's Set In Present Day - The Village
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq_B_ukrGKo M. Night Shyamalan's downfall as a director well and truly began with The Village, at which point he had begun to feel the wrath of audiences expecting every film he makes to deliver a jaw-dropping plot twist. With a strong promotional campaign, it actually seemed like The Village might be a fun supernatural horror about monsters attacking a provincial town, until the twist reveals that the monsters, in fact, are not monsters at all. They are simply townsfolk dressed up in order to ensure that people do not ever leave the village. And why is this? It's the mind-blowing reveal that, yes, the film is in fact set during modern times, and the village is an experiment by a professor to see if he could live protected from the outside world. Though this isn't a dreadful idea in of itself, it's all the logical issues it raises, specifically how they'd never have seen a plane fly over by chance (apparently the townsfolk paid off the government to make it a no-fly zone). It's just ridiculously contrived, and when it's revealed, you're more likely to laugh uproariously than be shocked or pleasantly surprised.
