10 Worst PG-13 Horror Films Since 2020

4. The Turning

Fantasy Island Movie
Universal Pictures

Fans of the 2020 Netflix series The Haunting of Bly Manor have author Henry James to thank in part, as his 1898 work The Turning of the Screw served as the basis for the story. The novella was also adapted into a feature film that same year, but that got far less positive attention.

The Turning centres on a nanny at a stately home who is put in charge of a young girl traumatised by the death of her parents. That harrowing experience begins to manifest in real life, causing all sorts of issues.

Originally, this movie had the best pedigree possible, as Steven Spielberg was the one who initially commissioned it. This didn’t last though, and the project got bounced around from director to director until it finally saw the light of day.

As well as being as scary as a Polly Pocket, The Turning also didn’t seem to make much sense, as many character motivations and plot points remain woefully in the dark. Stories begin and end with no real impact and viewers were left scratching their heads instead of hiding behind a blanket.

It does have nice sets though, which is… something.
