10 Worst Superhero Movies Of The 21st Century
3. Elektra (2005)
Does a superhero film still count if no one remembers it? Sadly for the cast, crew and production team of Elektra, yes it does. Introduced to the world of cinema during the equally forgettable Daredevil film of 2003, Elektra is the Marvel comic book character who after a near-death experience, becomes a gun for hire… or swords for hire I suppose.
Starring Jennifer Garner in the lead role, this film follows the story of Elektra as she becomes assassin turned bodyguard, when protecting her latest targets from a league of highly trained, almost supernatural hitmen. With a budget of $43million, Elektra barely scraped a profit from the box office and was seen as a severe under-performer across the board. It was annihilated critically upon its release and still to this day holds a rating of just 11% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s not easy to summarise everything wrong with this film, but it generally boils down to a lack of meaning and storyline.
The plot doesn’t progress because there is nothing for it to progress from, the characters are bland and their relationships with each other are noticeably forced by the lacklustre script. The fight scenes are more often than not intense and well choreographed, but good fight sequences don’t accommodate for a lack of substance around them.
Throughout this film you keep expecting a spark of direction or meaningful flair to take it by storm, but it never happens. Elektra is justifiably viewed as one Marvel’s biggest wastes of money.
