10 Worst Superhero Movies Of The 21st Century

2. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

Following the initial X-Men trilogy, everyone's perspective of what a superhero franchise could deliver when applied to the silver screen was changed. The relationship between characters, sub-plots and amazing individual acting performances all made the original trilogy (mostly) enjoyable.

But, perhaps a shade of hesitation should have glanced through their mind before releasing the story of Wolverine’s past in the form of this continuity error riddled prequel. Set before the formation of the X-Men, Wolverine’s origin story follows his feud with estranged, vicious and dangerous brother, Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber).

The main issue with this film arises from the nauseating ending which sent the superhero fandom into a shrieking frenzy, and rightfully so. Even on the official cast list, Ryan Reynolds is listed under the name ‘Deadpool’, so why isn’t Deadpool in it?! Instead of the dream match between Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, we saw the hybrid, re-animated body of Reynolds’ character with a sewn shut mouth and sword blades protruding from his knuckles get annihilated by Victor and Wolverine.

First of all, how did he bend his elbows if he had a full sword blade inside each arm? Secondly, this entire scene was shot by stunt doubles for the action sequence, so it may have been wiser to introduce a new character at this stage instead of infuriating your fanbase by having Ryan Reynolds as fake Deadpool.

On top of this, Creed never gets his comeuppance from Wolverine despite murdering his girlfriend and other mutants who were associated with Wolverine. Granted, it turns out he didn’t actually kill Wolverine’s girlfriend, but he is still a murderous psychopath who essentially gets away with it. All-in-all, this one of the most blood boiling and frustrating films you’ll ever see.
