10 Wrestlers Who Starred In Sci-Fi Movies
7. Roddy Piper
We all wish we could see Roddy Piper's charismatic personality and lines in action one more time. Whether in the ring or in the world of acting, the man truly was a legendary performer. Throughout his wrestling career, 'Rowdy' Roddy consistently featured as the lead or as a cameo in film releases, a few of those being entertaining sci-fi adventures. One release from the genre starring Piper has the word 'Frogtown' in the title - that's got to be enough to get you intrigued about his antics away from the ring.
Released in 1998, Hell Comes to Frogtown represented the second lead role for 'Hot Rod' in just his third movie appearance. The film's premise will sound like I'm making it up for those whose eyes haven't been blessed with this cult-classic yet, but I promise I'm not. Set after a worldwide nuclear war, 68% of the male population has been wiped out. One of the remaining is Sam Hell (played by Piper), who must help rescue multiple fertile women from a group of humanoid frogs in order to repopulate. You've got to wonder what the writers were on...
Another sci-fi lead role in the same year was not any less bizarre. In They Live, Piper plays a drifter named Nada, who discovers, through a pair of special sunglasses, that the ruling class are actually aliens (we've all wondered this...) concealing their appearance and manipulating people to breed, spend money and accept the status quo through subtle media propaganda. Considering some of the releases featuring wrestlers over the years and it being so early in Piper's acting career, They Live is actually an incredibly entertaining film, and is very worthy of its 86% Rotten Tomatoes rating and 7.2/10 average rating. We'd highly recommend.
