10 Wrestlers Who Starred In Sci-Fi Movies
8. John Cena
If legend is to be believed we can't see him in the ring, but since 2000 we've seen "Big Match John" in a number of films. A former 16-time world champion, Cena couldn't have accomplished much more in the wrestling industry before his schedule started to lean more towards other projects. 'The Doctor of Thuganomics' is approaching the period the likes of Dave Bautista and The Rock both found themselves in at some point in their transition to movie stardom - the point where roles in prominent films become available and his name starts to drift from solely a WWE legend towards a global Hollywood star.
Arguably his biggest starring-role to date, Cena established himself as a top actor after his performance as Agent Jack Burns in Bumblebee, the sixth instalment of the action-packed science fiction Transformers film series. Despite being the lowest grossing film in the franchise, the title was still a box office success, grossing $468 million worldwide along with positive reviews from critics, who praised the film's action sequences, setting, nostalgia and performances. The release represented a strong sci-fi debut for the 2008 and 2013 Royal Rumble winner.
Developed as a spin-off and prequel, the film was eventually announced as a reboot off the popular franchise. The premise of the 2018 release sees Bumblebee on the run in 1987, where he's discovered battered and bruised in a Californian junkyard by 18-year-old Charlie Watson. Playing the antagonist (something WWE fans have wanted from Cena for as long as most can remember...), Cena is allied with the Decepticons to hunt down Bumblebee. Commanding Sector 7 like he once commanded the ring, Cena's portrayal of Agent Jack Burns elevated his status in the male acting rankings.
As a former Money in the Bank winner, three-time Superstar of the Year Slammy Award winner, a five-time United States Champion and a former WWE Tag Team Champion, it's going to take a lot for Cena to replicate his wrestling success in his new leading profession as an actor, but with an upcoming role in the new Suicide Squad release, it's clear the multi-talented West Newbury-native is following in the footsteps of his WrestleMania XXVIII and 29 main event opponent.
