10 WTF Moments In Film You Won't Believe They Got Away With
4. Tentacle Sex
The film: Possession (1981) The world of film has a lot of making up to do to the poor old tentacle, especially after the attrocities committed in the name of Oldboy, but back in 1981, it was pre-emptively getting its own back on unsuspecting cinema goers by making the most vivid nightmares for those who viewed Lynchian horror Possession. Made by Andrzej Żuawski and starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill, the film started out as a tense emotional drama, edging towards dullness as the lead pair philosophised angirly at one another, before a second third shift into horror territory that was as jarring as it was profoundly odd. The film's most affecting scene is undoubtedly the grotesque breakdown scene in the subway that leaves a lasting memory of Adjani, and must have come at some emotional cost to her, and despite the vision of her leaking milk for very little reason, it is not the most gloriously WTF moment in a very odd film. The fact that the film was initially banned in the UK and heavily edited elsewhere has a lot to do with its depiction of Adjani's relationship with a man-eating tentacle monster and it is the horribly visceral scene between the actress and the realistic looking puppet that leaves the biggest psychological wounds. Quite how the scene made it through the censors when the film was rereleased in 1999 is anyone's guess, given the often-read assumption that the monstrous form is an amalgamation of the couple's hatred for one another, Adjani's character's loss of faith and hope, and her own miscarriage.
