Fifty people wake up in a dark room, placed in two concentric circles with small standing zones for them to occupy. Touch the person next to you or leave your zone, and a beam of light comes from the darkened ceiling and zaps you out of existence. Also, every two minutes someone dies at random. It doesn’t sound like a very fun game at all.
Fortunately, players have been gifted with the ability to pick who dies based on a voting mechanism that they can choose to use or not. Of course, with the power of choice comes plenty of manipulators, liars, and desperate clingers-on that will do anything to survive. But there can only be one.
For such a immobile concept, the film really plays out as an interesting exploration of the human psyche, with talking the only tool the characters can utilise in life or death decisions. With the lack of physical violence, it’s interesting to see how the group works it out - and the reason for their confinement in the first place.
