11 Best New Horror Movies For Halloween 2021
8. Candyman
Not all sequels and remakes are created equal, but as far as they go this one is pretty good. There are some solid scares, nice bits of gore and with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the leading role, you know there are some damn good performances.
It’s sort of a spiritual sequel following the original 1992 film, following on from the events almost three decades after they occurred. The film features a whole new cast and characters, this time following an artist named Anthony who finds himself sucked into the Candyman sphere through his art.
Looking at the same themes as its predecessor, director Nia DaCosta builds her narrative around the very real terror that comes with being a Black man in America and the supernatural horror of the mythical Candyman.
Reviews on this one aren’t universally good, with some saying its social commentary left something to be desired, but overall it makes for a solid expansion to the Candyman IP. Common narratives and messages but with new scares and outcomes, it is worth a watch in my books.
