11 Big Name Actors Who Ruined Good Horror Movies

5. Jennifer Lopez -- The Cell (2000)

Vince Vaughn was very much at home as Special Agent Peter Novak in ultra-futuristic sci-fi horror The Cell (2000), a film that split fans so far down the middle many have yet to pull themselves together again.

One of the Matrix copycats that actually had something of its own to say, blending the aforementioned sci-fi hit with ideas from the likes of Total Recall (1990), The Cell boldly attempted to straddle the line between a play-it-by-the-book mainstream genre hit and absurdist horror fantasy.

In the eye of the storm was Jennifer Lopez. Lopez was already an established actor, having recently starred in Gregory Nava's Selena (1997) and Steven Soderbergh's Out Of Sight (1998), and was beginning to make serious waves in the music world, so it must have seemed a no-brainer for image-obsessed music video/commercial director Tarsem Singh to cast her in the lead role of Dr Catherine Dean.

The film itself is original, exciting and features a plethora of dramatic visual setups with influences as diverse as Damien Hirst and HR Giger, underpinned by a bright, bold colour palette -- a visual identity Singh would perfect in the breathtakingly gorgeous The Fall (2006). Unfortunately, Lopez's performance is not strong enough to match it, especially opposite the likes of Vincent D'Onofrio. She looks great, but it's just not enough.
